i often drive this stretch along dubuque st. north of iowa city on my way home. i love this area and particularly how it looks in the evening. it was great to finally explore it on foot.

these were taken in north liberty where there is an absolutely amazing field of wildflowers. in recent years this entire area has become crammed with new developments, but fortunately there is one farm still in the midst and the owners planted this beautiful field of flowers. i only had about 15 minutes to take photos there which is probably a good thing because i would have kept shooting and shooting. i did notice that since then they erected a couple of signs that say "private garden". i imagine there were many people who couldn't resist the temptation to enter. (i did stay on the outer edge just a few feet from the sidewalk.)

my first post! thank you for visiting. this will hopefully be a weekly-ish thing and i'm shooting for an entire year of blogging.
i love doing this because it reminds me of how i spent a lot of my childhood. no, my parents didn't let me wander the roadsides of iowa, but i did spend most of my summer days roaming around our small town where i always seemed to end up at the "crick" among the rocks and weeds, often with my childhood soulmate, meredith. there were so many adventures... building forts, snake hunting (no joke!) and just enjoying being outside. i loved those carefree days. i often worry that my daughter won't get to experience the freedom that i did - a childhood with no video games, cell phones and other gadgets and the ability to leave the house in the morning, come back for lunch and then be gone all afternoon - copious unstructured time to imagine and explore.
anyway, enough of my musings. so here is my first series of photos. these were all taken in a ditch, a bit west of north liberty, ia
